PETER CHANTILIS

1934-1999

Peter Chantilis was at the forefront of the mediation movement in Dallas and a stalwart AAM member until his death in 1999. As a trial lawyer, Peter had seen first-hand the emotional and economic costs of litigation, and he immediately grasped the transforming possibilities of the mediation process. In his years of practice, he took mediation to the public and his fellow attorneys through speeches and training programs. He often appeared on radio or television to promote mediation. Peter was an innovator in introducing mediation to pending criminal cases. He was a co-founder of the American Academy of Attorney-Mediators, Inc., an organization which trains experienced attorneys to be mediators. As an adjunct professor at Southern Methodist University School of Law, he taught Alternative Dispute Resolution. His numerous publications include "The Do Right Rules" and "Eclectic Memories, Etcetera." Peter's enthusiasm for mediation was infectious, and he truly personified a commitment to go, not just the extra mile, but all the miles to help the parties reach a settlement.

In addition to his legal skills and experience, Peter brought to his mediation practice a lifetime of civic service. In addition to serving as a Commissioner of the City of University Park and President of The Cotton Bowl Council, he was founder of the Philanthropic Foundation and co-founder of The Kindness Foundation. He raised the money to construct The Gazebo in Goar Park in his community, and to construct the Black Land Prairie Garden and to restore the Statue of Liberty in Fair Park. As the son of Greek immigrants, Peter reveled in his heritage and welcomed all Greek newcomers to Dallas, making sure they were at home.

The Auxiliary of the Dallas Bar Association, in 1999, recognized Peter Chantilis' unique accomplishments and contributions by awarding him its prestigious Justinian Award.
